I’m a fan of Jerry Seinfeld. The show, Seinfeld, while seemingly marketed as, “a show about nothing,” actually had something — it was an acute observation for how some people and situations in real life are — just plain weird.
Like the new Microsoft ad — what about computing, butt-wiggling and cakes? (Cakes are awesome, by the way, plus, it’s ‘Coke’ with an ‘a.’)
Trying to look for hidden symbolism in this ad is, well, silly — because the people who didn’t get it (myself included) would instantly conclude that this is about Microsoft being just the next guy, who buys shoes, churros, normal things, etc, etc. (Everyone loves shoes!) A little digging around had to be done to squeeze out some information: Seinfeld picking out shoes for Gates is about Microsoft hiring “gurus” for several big stores (Circuit City, Best Buy, etc) to help consumers pick out what’s important for them, in terms of personal computing needs.
